Fixing Creaky Floors

As you may remember, we decided to keep the original hardwood floors on the second story.  We covered them to keep them protected during the renovations and will get them sanded and re-stained before we move in.

The only downside to keeping the old floors is that there were a number of creaky spots.  So, before installing the drywall on the main floor ceiling, we decided to do a bit of work to get rid of some of the squeaks.

One of Dave’s colleagues recommended using construction adhesive along each floor joist where it meets the subfloor (we used PL Premium adhesive).  Since the ceilings were down, we were able to reach up and do this from below.  It took some time, but was worth the effort.

Once it dried, it eliminated the majority of the creaky spots.  It’s not a perfect fix, but it definitely helped a lot.

Oh, well done!

My previous owners didn't have access from below and solved the squeaky floor problem by slamming in not a few roofing nails and laying down carpet. Now that I'm going natural again, I have to figure out what to do about those big-headed nails. And maybe, how to cope with renewed squeaks should I pull them out.

*sigh*

PL is great stuff. Definitely worth buying a contractor pack if you're doing the whole house! We've used it in more places than I can count.

Aw yes, living in an old house = creaky floors. I'm still trying to find a path up our stairs that doesn't creak, so I don't wake Aubrey up. As someone said when they came over - it adds to the charm of a house. So I've embraced it. :)

Your tips are really useful for newbies! Our floor get damaged because of time, bugs and other insects, etc., Some of us, prefer to place carpets on it to avoid scratches. We clean our carpets with a good vacuum cleaner, carpet cleaning materials, or sometimes hire carpet cleaners. (Norfolk has a lot of trustworthy carpet cleaners).

Amazing save right there. Stuff like these tend to demand the most out of our resourcefulness and ingenuity. They also demand our utmost vigilance, especially with regards to the standing of our structure, such as our houses; parts of which entail the whole.
