Today, we continued sanding and priming. With the help of Marilyn and Cody, we got tackled the staircase. The plan for the stairs is:
- paint the spindles and stair risers white
- stain the banister, post and stair treads dark brown.
Since we’re hiring a flooring company to refinish the hardwood floors on the second storey, we will get them to do the staining on the stairs. We’re doing the painting ourselves.
We also did some work on the built-in linen closet in the upstairs hallway. We removed the hardware, sanded the drawers and door, and primed everything. We plan to paint it white and add some updated drawer pulls.
Here’s the closet before:
And here’s what we’ve done so far:

We're thinking about doing the same thing with our stairs once we add a new railing. It's looking great. Do you guys plan to add a runner? I like the look of hardwood stairs, but we're planning to at least do a runner so the stairs will hopefully be quieter and softer for the little one.
Hi Vez. Yes, we plan to add a stair runner. We haven't had a chance to go look at any yet, but we're thinking of something pretty simple in a beige or taupe colour.
Oooh I can't wait to see the "after" pics!
We are planning on doing something similar to ours - ours currently have white risers and everything else is brown wood with a beige dirty carpet runner.
Looking good! I'm going to tell you a quick tip after we did our spindles + stairs. I used white oil paint for it, and what they don't tell you is that white oil paint yellows over time (like a year). Oil paint is more durable, so I'm not recommending not going with oil, but I'm giving you the heads up.
Thanks for the tip, Lindsay. We're planning on using latex throughout the house, so hopefully we'll avoid the yellowing!
