Kitchen Design

We went to Ikea this weekend to talk to a kitchen planner. (Some advice: DO NOT try to talk to a kitchen planner on a rainy Saturday afternoon. We waited for hours!) We had already spent a lot of time using their 3D planner program to lay out what we wanted, but we had a few questions.

Our basic plan for the kitchen is this:
  • Place fridge and stove/microwave along the outside wall, with the majority of the cabinet space.

  • Add an island (approximately 6' long and 3'wide) under the new beam, between the kitchen window and the dining room door.

  • Place the sink and dishwasher in the island.

  • Add a small cabinet with glass doors above the island, on the back wall.

  • Add a tall, built-in pantry to the space across from the fridge.

There are still a few things to figure out before we make the final decision about going the Ikea route. If you have any ideas/suggestions, we'd love to hear them!

I suggest a dinner party when this is all completed! =)

OH...and make sure that your cabinets are deep enough to fit your plates. Sounds rather obvious, but our square plates are too deep and now have to be kept in a corner cupboard!

Just wondering.....if you decide to go with an Ikea kitchen, do you get a lifetime supply of ikea meatballs? If so, then i'd definitely go with them. (It would seem that their kitchens are also quite beautiful!!)

Just a comment on functionality... if your dishwasher is in the island, you may want to designate the uppers within arms reach as the dish storage cabinets. Makes for easier emptying of the dishwasher.

Good suggestion Wanderluster....our plates and cuterly are stored across the kitchen and we tend to bump into each other if two people are emptying the dishwasher at the same time...too much walking back and forth.

My friend has an IKEA kitchen and I love her kitchen (as does she) and it was well thought out. My diswasher is away from the cupboards and its a tad annoying when empyting it.
